Fabriano is an importantlandmark for the history of paper, boasting an ancient manufacturing tradition and a strong will to recover its ancient cultural roots tightly connected to paper art.
![]() Municipality of Fabriano and Cartiere Miliani, in order to protect the historical culture of Fabriano, have founded the Museum of paper and watermark, located into an ancient building that once was the convent of San Domenico, following the suggestion given last century by Augusto and Aurelio Zonghi, famous collectors and scholars of watermarks, and later by the storiographer Andrea Gasparinetti.
After a rigorous selection of materials and historical references, Museum was
setted up with thematic rooms: hand-manufacturing of paper and use of the manufacturing products, exposition of watermarks, visualization of the historical journey of paper, develop of paper art in Fabriano's land, its workmanship and technology through many documents and thematic boards that allow everyone to learn this activity, still practised after seven centuries in the same place known all over the world for this reason.
This multifunctional museum is a public institution able to give informations that can satisfy curiosity of visitors and let discover them an art (and an industry) still instrumental for the man of third millennium.It protects and improves the historical heritage of appenninic culture where born talent and creativity of master paper makers, the first in Europe.
It's an institution born to carry the cultural message of paper, to contribute to international researches in this important field, the history of paper, and improve tourism in Alta Valle dell'Esino.
It's also possible to attend courses of two or three days to learn the foundations of the art of making paper, make watermarks and hand-made paper, bind books with manufacturing products.
