Fabriano is the first town of central Appennino that you can find coming from Umbria.
hotel FabrianoIt reaches out in an area of 266 kmq (Fabriano is one of the largest municipality of Italy) in which are residing more than 30.000 inhabitants. It is universally kown as "the town of the paper": it was, infact, one of the first center in Europe where, from the beginning of XII century, started the manufacturing of paper. However, in the mid-twentieth century, began its conversion from agricultural center to industrial district, becoming an important landmark in the regional and national economy. This wellness allowed to reach a good quality of life in a place where the hard work of people it always have been joined to history, art and culture.

Fabriano was also one of the few towns in the Marche to have developped a considerable painting school, productive for over than two centuries (XIV and XV), wich had supported the innovations bringed from artists of other italian painting schools. We can remind, for all, the major artists of Fabriano: Allegretto Nuzi (1320-1373), Francescuccio di Cecco Ghissi, Gentile da Fabriano (1370-1427), Antonio da Fabriano (1451-1489).

As important link between Marche and Umbria, Fabriano still mantains its medieval appearance, attested by its main square, Piazza del Comune, and the ancient paintings (1200-1300) hedged in its Picture Gallery.
First settlements in this area go back up pre-roman and roman age: durnig roman age was created the word "Fabriano", that is considered the adjective of a roman name (Faberius), the owner of a land where subsequently arose the medieval castles.
The first mention of a town with this name go back up 1065, but only a document of 1160 talks about two castles builted in opposite hills. The economical, social, artistical and cultural development there was between XIII and XVI century, expecially when (in the midlle of 1300) the powerful Chiavelli's family, changed the free municipality into a lordship. In the middle of 1400, after the short governance of Francesco Sforza, the town was added to Stato Pontificio, and, under this heel, began a long period of decline, stopped in the recent past with the development of the household electrical appliances industry.
